Besalu, Catalonia – The Fortified Town in Pictures

The church outside Besalu is often overlooked by visitors which is a shame as it's traditional Spanish design is the embodiment of humility.

The Romanesque bridge at Besalu viewed from the road bridge.

The heavily walled town sits on Santa maria hill across el Fluvia.

Santa Maria hill is surrounded by greenery creating a strong contrast with the pale walls of Besalu.

You can see how the town has grown outwards and upwards over the centuries.

The new road bridge as viewed from the Romanesque bridge is well built but lacks the flamboyance of its aged neighbour.

Crossing the bridge towards the town, heading into the sun...

The gate that once blocked unwanted interlopers is now open and welcoming...
