If you are out and about in Eixample and need to pick up some healthy organic snacks or food supplies, cosmetics, home products or dog or kitty fodder – you need go no further than Biospace.
A lovely bright two-storey store that sells pretty much the full range of organic and health food products that you can get in Spain. There are the usuals: herbal teas, pastas, rices, fresh fruit and vegetables (all organic), oils, vinegars, nut butters, honeys, jams, spreads, cheeses, fresh bread, olives, baby foods – the flipping whole damn lot.
Their range is good due to the size of the place and seems to be the largest and best stocked organic supermarket in Barcelona. Infinitely bigger than Veritas on Laeitana and so the range they stock is more impressive. You can get things in here that it is seems to be difficult to pick up elsewhere, such as sprouts for germinating. I’ve only seen these in Veritas previously and with few varieties. Sprouts are very expensive in Spain unfortunately but the Spaniards are catching on quickly to the health food revolution – in Barcelona at least – and this should hopefully drag the price down to normal and become affordable for all.
In addition to food you can also have beauty treatments such as facials and massages that all use organic best-quality products and there is also an organic hairdressers (peluqueria) – the first I can recall seeing in Spain. Here you can have tints, colours and treatments with organic products that are less toxic to you and what’s left of the environment.
They also run courses in healthy food preparation and hold regular classes in both pilates and yoga, although all courses and classes are held in catalan or castellano.
Staff at biospace are very friendly and knowledgeable and always seem happy to help you find what you need if they’ve got it. Even if you speak in syllables.
I love this place and can lose myself in here for at least an hour. Jacob says he sometimes wishes I’d get lost in there forever. Perhaps one day I will.
