Braga necessities and basics

Here is some information about the basic things and places you might requires whilst in Braga such as post offices, pharmacies and hospitals.

Banks and ATMs
Head for Rua dos Capelistas for a range of banks with ATMs. Some Multibanco’s will not accept international credit and debit cards such as Visa and Maestro, but try a few and you’re bound to find one that accepts your card. Don’t panic like I did and imagine yourself stranded forever.

Exchanges
There is an exchange on Rua dos Capelistas that is open regular shop hours.

Chemist / pharmacy
The best pharmacy can be found on Rua dos Capelistas – Farmacia Central. Staff here speak a little or a lot of English depending how lucky your day is. In Portugal, some medication such as inhalers for Asthma etc that you would usually need a prescription for in the UK, Germany and the United States, can be bought cheaply over the counter in pharmacists rather than having to use up valuable A&E hospital time for something it’s impossible to OD on anyway.

Hospital
The nearest hospital with an accident and emergency department is Sao Marcos on Largo Carlos Amarante. Hopefully, you won’t need to go here.

Police
There is a police station at Largo de Santiago, 6. Again, hopefully you won’t have need to go here unless you are really into cops.

Post Office
The post office is located on Rua Goncalo Sampalo which is off Avenida da Liberade. It opens Monday to Friday between 8.30hrs and 18hrs and Saturday from 09hrs to 12.30hrs.

Buses and Trains
For bus and train times, go to the tourist office on the corner of Avenida da Liberdade and Avenida Central.
