Set just back from the beach, firmly entrenched amid the concrete blocks of high rise apartments is Camping Calpemar, an odd but well equipped camp site in the heart of Calpe, Costa Blanca.
I call it an odd site because it’s not a typical camp site in the sense of tents and backpackers. Camping Calpemar appeals to the campervan brigade and has 86 pitches with 16amp electricity, a sink for dish washing but oddly, no points to anchor guy ropes to.
The pitches are moderately sized and can be difficult to squeeze larger vehicles into.
When we arrived the place was buzzing with English, Dutch and German pensioners with their oversized wagons; some displaying signs saying things along the lines of, “Dennis and Kath, living the dream.”
If the dream is to live in a concrete campsite full of other dream livers then fair enough. What a dream!
On site facilities are very clean with excellent showers (among the best I’ve used at any site), very well stocked bathrooms and toilets, decent washing facilities, a very clean pool, a bar/restaurant which provides nightly entertainment and even a dog washing facility (at a cost of 1 euro).
The layout is very tight and I saw a few people struggle to manoeuvre their RVs. The tight nature of the site does create a sense of community however and a lot of people socialised at their pitches on a regular basis.
I imagine quite a few couples have taken up residence there.
Camping Calpemar is 300m from the beach and offers views of the surrounding hills and Penon de Ifach. Sadly, it is also dwarfed by a number of high rise apartment blocks. Another problem with close proximity to the beach is the noise from night clubs which comes complete with rowdy, football chanting holiday makers too; all of which lead to some restless nights.
All in all it’s a very clean, well maintained site which is flawed by its location, surroundings, late night noise and concrete pitches.
