Review of Centurium Book Shop & Cafe – Braga, Portugal

This is the most divine spot in Braga, which is saying something in a divine city full of divine spots.
Firstly, the bookshop is just beautiful – an old-fashioned bookshop with book cases so high that you need ladders to climb them. Everything is attractively laid out and there is a massive range of books from cookery books to graphic novels. There isn’t an English section, although just visiting the bookshop is a treat in itself.
AT the back of the shop there is a glorious little cafeteria and an absolutely gorgeous back garden with several tables and chairs.
The café serves delicious cakes such as brownies, a sharp lemon tart, giant cookies and carrot cake and you can also have toast or sandwiches such as mozzarella, pesto and tomato on beautiful granary bread. The freshly squeezed orange juice comes ice cold and is just magical in the blistering heat. There are also luscious coffees, chocolate and full meals available but I went there to sit in the magic garden and to drink ice cold orange juice.
They even allowed us to take our doggies in (so long as we carried them through to the garden) and we let them sniff about in the garden until they started woofing and they went back on their leads. We warned them, but oh no, they wouldn’t listen.
This is by far my favourite spot in all of Braga and it’s the first place I came to when I arrived. Everything about the Bookshop Cafeteria reeks of bloody class.
There is also free wireless internet which is available both inside the café and in the garden.
A very special place in a very lovely city. Shhhh.
