El Estragon vegetarian restaurant – Madrid

Plaza de la Paja 10
near La Latina metro station

13.30hrs – 16.30hrs and 20.30hrs – 00hrs

A fairly pricey small vegetarian restaurant with an inadequate number of vegan options.

Starters include endives with Roquefort cheese, Moroccan salad or avocado salad. There is a good range of soups for the second course eg garlic soup, vichyssoise, creamed spinach or onion.

There are lots of main courses including crepes filled with leeks, vegetarian burger with brie cheese, soya ‘meat’ balls, scrambled eggs with fried potatoes, lasagne, vegetarian goulash, paella, spaghetti bolognaise, pizza, grilled vegetables and wraps. Mains cost around the €12 – €16 mark, which is quite expensive but we both left feeling well fed.

Desserts include apple tart with organic compote, banana fritter served with honey, home made natural yogurt with plum jam, fruit salad with honey and a not very healthy but entirely decadent sounding hot chocolate brownie.

Menu items containing egg and gluten are marked and English menus are available.

The portions were sizeable and all the food was well presented.

Best thing – for me – about this place was that there is an outdoor terrace where lovely young Mr Sweep Osito, our four-legged lovely was able to nap under the table whilst we ate. That makes us all very happy.

Goodish food with lots of choices and dog-friendly. My only criticisms that the dishes were expensive and that there was not enough for vegans.
