Another reason the port at Estepona is one of my favorite all-time wild camping locations was its proximity to Elemi – a vegetarian restaurant ironically positioned beside the bullfighting ring in Estepona.
The online menu read well with a choice of wraps and sandwiches (using Quorn – a rarity in Spain) with some mouth-watering combinations such as Delhi with mango chutney, cucumber, peppers, red onion, spinach, cream cheese and yogurt dressing; Mexican with chilli beans, cheddar cheese, peppers, jalapenos, avocado, red onion, spinach and cream cheese; Lebanese with falafel, hummus, tomato, cucumber, red onion, peppers, spinach leaves, cream cheese and yogurt dressing; a Moroccan with hummus, Quorn couscous, peppers, red onion, spinach and yogurt dressing; a Los Angeles with warm marinated Quorn, avocado, smoked cheese, peppers, red onion, spinach, cream cheese and chilli jam and a British with vegetarian sausage, veggie bacon, scrambled free range eggs, spinach, cream cheese and tomato relish. All wraps cost €7.25.
The salads come generally in two sizes (regular and large) and you can select from an Elemi salad with avocado, feta cheese, tomato, cucumber, red onion, peppers, olives, dates, nuts and mixed leaves with a fresh herb dressing or a warm organic tofu salad with rice noodles, smoked tofu, red onion, peppers, spicy peanuts, grated carrot and courgette on mixed leaves with a soy and lime dressing. Salads cost from €6.45 up to €9.50.
Main dishes consist of roasted vegetable lasagne; baked lentil and spinach moussaka; mung-bean shepherdess pie served with vegetables; quesadillas with a choice of fillings, veggie burgers, shepherds pies and quiche.
They have a range of decent juices such as carrot, apple, orange and ginger; carrot, apple and celery; pineapple, apple and orange; apple, mixed berries, pineapple and grapefruit and they also have smoothies made with either soya milk or with fat-free frozen yogurt. Combos include mixed berries and apple juice; milk, banana, date and cinnamon; and mango, passion fruit and apple juice. Juices and smoothies start from €3.00.
The menu of the day costs €8.95 and includes three courses: starters such as home-made soup, mixed salad or bruschetta; main courses such as wholemeal spaghetti with vegetarian meatballs, and home made sauce; roasted vegetables with fruit and nut wholemeal couscous; pizza with Mediterranean vegetables, mozzarella and home-made French fries; or goat’s cheese quiche with salad and roast potatoes; desserts include fruit crumble with custard, almond cake, lemon cake, orange cake or ice cream. The menu of the day is served between 13hrs and 16.30hrs.
The most amazing thing about Elemi is the wheatgrass juice – the first time I’ve found fresh wheatgrass juice in Spain in over one and a half years of travelling around it.
