Volte Duche in Sintra is a main road which links the historic centre to Estefania and the train station. It is also currently home to a gallery of sculptures, mainly in stone, of abstract designs by up and coming artists.
The display runs until next year and the makes an interesting focal point. The road curves sharply and the sculptures are spaced out evenly along the road side like totems. They range in design from faces and trees to figurines and more unusual abstractions like honeycombs and twisted pipes of stone.
It’s good to see artwork being used in such a public way to add even more flare to an already astonishing place. Sintra is a hotbed of creativity; it’s in the air and the mountain soil, something inescapable, and the open air gallery is another part of that process.
