Hotel Valdecoro in Potes, Cantabria (Picos de Europa National Park)

Sometimes people visit us who do not like sharing the floor of our campervan with Sweep (our little dog).

This hotel can be booked via Booking.com by clicking here

Some of them don´t even want to sleep in a tent, even if we offer them nice air beds and warm sleeping bags and the temperature does not even go below freezing (32 Fahrenheit, which is 0 Degrees in Europe – spoiled big city people……

Anyway, luckily there are lots of cheap pensions, hostels and hotels around here in Northern Spain.

Particularly in the off-season, you can get a very decent hotel room for under 50 Euros (65 US$ or 45 GBP in October 2011).

Our favorite hotel in Potes, Cantabria (know as the gate to the Picos de Europa national park) has to be the Hotel Valderoco which is located at the southern end of Potes. If you enter Potes from the North, it is right at the beginning of town on the right side of the road).

If you try to find it coming from the south or from the center of town, you´ll probably drive past, because it does not say “Hotel Valderoco” on the front, but only (!) Restaurante Paco Wences…. (WTF?). We actually drove past a few times because our GPS-Satnav did not know the address, and we were looking for a hotel, not a restaurant….. (see section “Strange Spain”)…

When driving up from the cost (or if you have missed it,  finally realized turned around and went back into town) it would look like this:

The rooms must have been renovated recently… They look like this:

For those of you with a idea of nice things: not only is the floor a dark-brown (new) hardwood-floor, but the bathroom floor is dark-grey granite…. And the bed covers felt really nice, not the cheapo type, but rather expensive-feeling stuff:

At first, our visitor was afraid that it would be a bit loud, as his room was facing the main road of Potes. But after dark and until 7am, according to our visitor, it was really quiet.

And even the regular Spanish darking dogs shut up around 11pm…

Of course there is no air condition, and we did not even try the breakfast (included in the price, but it could not have been anything but a coffee and packaged sweet rolll….). But for 42 Euro for a single room, there is really nothing to wine about!

Book via Booking.com to get great prices at the Hotel Valdecoro in Potes, Cantabria, Spain or at other hotels in the area…
