The day I arrived at Tarifa on the Costa de la Luz, Andalucia, I got my first taste of kitesurfing; an amazing looking sport where you’re strapped to a kite and pulled along at high speed on a short, stubby surfboard. The kitesurfers turn out in great numbers along Parc Natural del Estrecho as the conditions are generally perfect for it and it really does look like a blast.
There are several kitesurfing schools along that golden stretch of beach and it’s hard to miss the plethora of brightly coloured kites pulling adrenaline junkies across the crests of wave after Atlantic wave.
Prices between schools seem to vary for kitesurfing lessons and Volare appear to be one of the more reasonably priced out there. Their course for three days (a total of nine hours tuition) is 200 euros and that includes the tuition fees, wetsuit, board and kite hire as well as insurance.
The course is broken down into three hours per day over three days and groups are limited to four people. In the first lesson you are given the low-down on kitesurfing, safety measures and the basics.
The second lesson gives you a bit more practical and you share a kite with a partner for some genuine experience and a lot of grappling.
The final lesson puts you in the sea, fully rigged up on your kitesurf so that you can learn techniques and feel the rush as you leap into the air and hang there, defying gravity just long enough to feel the butterflies in your stomach go mental. Well, that’s if you’re lucky.
Volare are open every day between 10:30 and 19:30. They also offer individual and private lessons at the following rates:
- 1 Day 3 hour session = 70 euros
- 1 Day 4 hour session = 85 euros
- 2 Days, 6 hours total = 130 euros
- 2 Days, 8 hours total = 180 euros
- 3 Days, 9 hours total = 200 euros
- 3 Days, 12 hours total = 230 euros
- Private 2 hour sessions = 150 euros
