Monsaraz sits high on a hill overlooking the River Guadiana, Alqueva Lakes and the heart of the grape growing country in Alentejo. It is a beautiful little town, fairly unheard of, yet once visited it will never be forgotten.

Its walls date back to the 12th century and it has suffered frequently at the hands of one tyrant or other down the centuries since.

Take a look at Monsaraz, Alentejo, in the first of two galleries.

Read about Monsaraz, part two of the gallery, the nearby Nautical Centre, our wild camp just outside the walls and our wild camp on the shores of the Alqueva Lakes.
