Once of the more pleasant surprises at the very commercialised resort of Torre del Mar was finding Restaurante Padre Pio, a seafront eatery that actually caters for vegetarians in the most accommodating of ways.
Padre Pio has only been open around a year (at the time of writing) and they are very keen to impress their customers with old fashioned waiting, good food and a splendid atmosphere. And they’re winning.
We ended up eating there after speaking to a very enthusiastic Canadian lady who has eaten there several times in the past few months and she couldn’t praise it highly enough. I explained that we are vegetarian and most places are no-go when she told me about their vegetarian lasagne made with kale I was sold.
The staff are incredibly friendly and absolutely nothing seems to be too much trouble. We were given our own gas heater (we sat outside because of Sweep) and in-between courses we were treated to aperitifs, all made and cooked beautifully.
The main course was good too although not quite as good as the starters. I enjoyed having ready made vegetarian fodder instead of cobbled together, we’ll-do-anything-for-your-money, bread, cheese and tuna options (the Spanish don’t get that fish is meat) you generally get at other places.
The owner took great pride in his restaurant and the excellent food and service aside, the interior has terrific décor and a very cosy feel to it.
If you find yourself in Torre del Mar and you’re looking for somewhere a bit classier to eat with a great atmosphere and excellent service that doesn’t just dish up burgers and chips or greasy Chinese food, then Padre Pio is the place.
