Rethinking the Van Design Part 14 – Let There Be Light

The new fangle under bed storage area was a big hit with me but it presented one minor problem; lack of light.

With the new remap under way there is a bunch of wiring and refitting to be done so I pondered the idea of having a fixed light underneath the frame which would run fro the leisure battery. Looking at the route the wiring would take I decided against it. It’s not that I’m lazy, it’s just that I found a better solution while buying some recordable DVDs.

Before I get to that, I’d like to point out that I’d spent a fair few hours mooching about the internet for lighting solutions. I encountered strip lights with dull looking bulbs that would struggle to illuminate anything more than a millimetre away, halogen lamps, cheap and gloomy solar numbers and I even considered removing the interior light at the back of the van for the job.

Well, they were all cack ideas so when I found a nice shiny little battery operated multi-LED lamp with a magnetic back I was pretty made up. Mainly because of the magnetic back but also because it is one bright box of bulbs.

It's small, round and easily found. Shiny.

Because the under-bed area will be split into an interior cupboard and a boot I thought I’d need at least two lights, so this little number was a real find because it meant I could fit a couple of metal strips and stick the light to them when needed.

It takes two AA batteries which isn’t a problem as I have a solar battery charger. It also has a fold out hook for hanging purposes. Neat.

It’s a cheap but very effective and versatile solution which has saved me a heap of panel removal, wire running and terminal crimping.
