Parque de Campismo in Vidoeiro is an adorable little campsite (especially for campers) where you can easily find yourself a bit of paradise (secluded in low season or during the week) along a gurgling river that runs right through the site.

If you are in a camper van then you can park up with views down to the river and sleep with the babbling sound of the water caressing the rocks and stones below. If you are camping then you have some delightful spots to choose from. The best of which are on terraced areas right next to the river beneath tall trees with each enjoying its own barbecue area.

Facilities  are basic with no washing machine or supermarket although there is a drinks and snack machine next to reception where you can buy basic unhealthy chocolate and crisps, soft drinks, water and a hot drink machine vends fairly decent coffee and hot chocolate. For better shopping there are a few small minimarkets in town that will vend you the basics, and a market that has good fruit and vegetables although if you have your own transport and intend to stay a while you would be better advised to head 20 kilometres to the nearest proper supermarket for anything other than fruit and veg.

From the campsite you can walk the half kilometre or so into Geres where you will find restaurants, a tourist office and various thermal baths. There is a lovely park with a glorious boating lake and vast swimming pools although you will need to pay €1 just to get into the park and then for each activity. It’s a great park for dog walking and for picnicking.

There is also a 10 kilometre walk (PR 03) that is fairly challenging but worth the bother. You can join this along the road towards Geres on the left-hand side (red and yellow markings).

The campsite is likeable and the trees mean you can find plenty of shelter from the heat when necessary. Prices are good with two humans, two quadrupeds, a van and electricity costing just €17 or so per night during high season. At the weekends the site gets busy with happy Portuguese barbecuing and playing in the river in July but during the week it is quiet and tourists have the place mostly to themselves.
