Santa Maria church in Arenys de Mar, Catalonia contains one of the most beautifully preserved baroque altars (created by the sculptor Pau Costa) in the whole of Catalonia. The church was built at the beginning of the 18th century.
The building is made from stone and looked after by a delightful monk called Patricio who will happily impart information about this beautiful building if you have a smattering of Castillano.
I’m not a religious person, but Santa Maria is one of the most tranquil places I’ve ever been to. The moment I entered I was enveloped with a sense of benevolence. Brother Patricio even came out and stroked Sweep’s head – which he liked. Sweep is blessed.
