Type: Wild camp
Name: Can Xel (Can Chell)
Where: Can Xel, Just south of Olot, Catalunya
How to find it: Take the Gi-524 south from Olot and follow signs towards Santa Pau. The site is on a bend opposite Hotel Can Xel and a Piscina.
There were several options of wild spots available to us along the ??(road name)?? and after several forays along side roads we settled for a spot in the car park opposite Can Xel. There were several other campers there too in parking spaces for coaches so we followed suit.
There were several bonuses to parking at Can Xel; firstly the restaurant / hotel over the road had toilets and a bakery which served us well the next morning; secondly, there was a drinking water supply from a font; thirdly, Sweep had several places to walk (which we took full advantage of the next morning) and lastly, there was a 230v electric hookup for coaches which was open to abuse.
In mid August this hilly retreat was blistering hot and we slept with the doors open, enjoying an undisturbed sleep.
The local area is rich in walks and volcanic history and for Sweep this was a major boost. He loved the volcano hike although the horses at the church nearby gave him some cause for barking.
Although beside a main road traffic noise was kept to a minimum, drivers generally preferring the major highways than this winding country road.
On the downside we struggled to get an internet connection with our Carrefour dongle and that, combined with the heat meant that our stay was limited to one night only.
Wild camping may not be your thing but if you wanted to explore the volcanic region of Garrotxa you could always book a hotel in Santa Pau by clicking here.
Our Verdict: terrific spot for a good night sleep, great walks and handy hotel over the road. Marred by the lack of internet and the heat was largely unbearable. Out of the peak summer months this would be a terrific spot if you didn’t need internet.
Sweep’s Verdict: Paws up.
