Carrer de Maria Aguilo and corner of Carrer del Jonca
If you’re in Poble Nou and need to stock up on all things organic and healthy (and some things not so) then Veritas is a good place to head.
Living on the road makes it difficult to buy organic – due to availability and to costs – but in Catalonia the former isn’t such a problem – Veritas stocks a good range of things to keep your raw, vegetarian or vegan kitchen cupboard brimming.
The Veritas in Poble Nou in Barcelona is the most attractive store I’ve been in and is in a beautiful location in a sunny Placa.
There aren’t many surprises here if you are coming from somewhere such as New York or London, UK where you have ginormous Wholefoods on every corner but you can pick from a half dozen types of organic olive oils. You can buy Asian ingredients here such as seaweed (algas) and soy, tamari and shoyu – although neither the seaweed or shoyu is raw. I’ve yet to come across those in Spain.
They also have a small range of organic meats and meat products such as pork sausages, chicken cuts and lamb – which naturally don’t attract us tall folk so much, but are of interest to our small four-legged son of the hairy variety.
You can also buy fresh fruit and vegetables, sweeteners such as agave syrup, raw cane sugar, rice syrup, maple syrup and fructose; organic dog and cat food; organic baby products and sanitary products; domestic eco-cleaning products; tahini, nut butter (not raw and very expensive); organic chocolate spreads, jams and marmalades; herbal teas; flours, cookies, cakes, rice cakes, crackers; potato chips, nuts, seeds, and a load of tofu products.
Veritas also has a small panaderia (bakery) where you can buy hearty breads, baguettes, rolls, croissants, cookies, cakes and some delicious wholegrain organic croissants.
Generally you can buy cucumbers, zucchini, carrots, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, bagged lettuces, dates, spinach, lemons, mangoes and bananas – all organic. All pricey too but that’s organic for you. We have to pay not to have our foods fucked with.
Very sadly indeed, there are no specialist raw vegan foods currently available in Veritas, nor throughout Spain in my experience. Boo bloody hoo.
If you really want to support local, organic businesses than even better than Veritas is nearby Vida Meva at Maria Aguilo 68.
