We discovered Visao dos Campos through their website while looking for somewhere to ‘Glamp’ in Portugal. It is the creation and handiwork of Glenn and Dianne; an English couple who have been living in Portugal for a number of years and wanted to do something slightly different while offering people the opportunity to explore and discover the rural areas around Coimbra.
What they have created is a stunning trapper’s tent in a wonderful location; perched on stanchions at the top end of a valley, the tent faces west so that of an evening you can enjoy the sunset from the wooden terrace or the comfort of the plush bed.
The tent was custom made by a local company; a 12ft square space covered in canvas through which the wind rattles comfortingly at night and the minimal but exceedingly tasteful décor feels homely yet somehow exotic, making you feel like you’re truly adventuring in some far flung corner of the world.
Glenn and Dianne have worked hard to make their little slice of rural paradise just so. The trapper’s tent is only one aspect of the place which is enhanced by the partially outdoor kitchen, well stocked with a two ring stove and two small fridges as well as all the necessary paraphernalia like plates, dishes, cutlery and pans. There is also a very plush bathroom built into a shepherd’s hut on wheels; a gyspy style affair with a full size bath, plenty of hot water, an excellent toilet, mirror and wash basin.
Another plus point for us is that Visao dos Campos is very dog friendly. Sweep was made as welcome as we were and he quickly made friends with their lovely dog, “Trouble”.
As if the heavily forested landscape with its blue eucalyptus hills and mountains, luxurious trapper’s tent, open kitchen, exquisite bathroom and incredible views aren’t enough, Glenn and Dianne are the perfect hosts;there when you need them but more than happy to give you the privacy you require. Their combined knowledge of the area is a boon too and they can offer plenty of things to do besides relaxing in the tent, such as kayaking with Trans Serrano on the Mondego River, trips into Coimbra as well as trips around the local countryside.
For an experience beyond mere camping in the wild, Visao dos Campos is hard to beat, especially as the love and care put into the location by Glenn and Dianne oozes from every facet.
