For salads, fresh juices, soups and freshly prepared sandwiches, fruit salads and pasta dishes and pastries, Vitaminas should be top of your list if your stuck for something quick and fresh to eat whilst in beautiful Aveiro (see more of Aveiro here) in Portugal.

The juices are delicious, and whilst they are not freshly prepared on the spot as it where, like a juice bars, they are made that same day. You can chooses from apple and pineapple; carrot and orange; water melon or a multivitamin combination of mango, carrot and orange. A large glass of chilled juice will cost €2.20, which is a bargain I reckon. Even better value, if you arrive between 5 and 7pm, then you can take two juices for the price of one.

Salads are buffet style. You pick from twenty or so different ingredients such as sweet corn, ham, cheese, tomatoes, pasta, boiled eggs, grated carrot, grated beetroot, olives, mixed leaves, coleslaw etc. Add a combination of these ingredients to a base of plain lettuce or an exotic mix of leaves or to white or wholewheat pasta. There is a choice of dressings to add to this including simple olive oil and lemon juice, yogurt dressing etc.

A salad that includes five ingredients, one dressing and the base leaves costs €5.90.

If you aren’t so fussy you can have one of the tried-and-tested flavour combinations such as chicken and nuts, salmon and prawn and chicken and vegetable.

If you want a sandwich then you can choose between white baguette or a cereal baguette and then choose your fillings.

A sandwich that includes 5 ingredients and one dressing costs €5.50. Tried and tested combos include chicken and pineapple, turkey and mustard or mozzarella and pesto.

There are plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans here.

Desserts include mango or passion fruit mousse, pureed banana with yogurt and cereal and pureed apple with yogurt.

You can also buy chopped fruit and fruit salads and pastries such as chicken empadas and spinach and cheese quiche.

Vitaminas is located inside the shopping mall, and so it’s not such a beautiful location, but as a stop off point amidst sightseeing, it’s a great air-conditioned spot with a good choice of healthy, vegetarian, carnivorous and non-healthy options.

Takeaway is also available.
