Type: Wild camp
Name: Colomers river
Where: Kayak del Ter, Colomers, Catalunya
How to find it: Follow signs for Kayak Del Ter and look out for an old London Routemaster bus parked beside the river along the GI-634.
We spotted this wild spot on the way to Banyoles and decided to investigate. The big landmark is the old London bus which is adorned with Union Jacks, situated next to a river. There is a kayak hire centre next to the bus and in the summer the car park apparently gets quite busy.
There are two spots in one here; the car park where the bus is parked backs onto the river and looks the more ideal of the two but according to the kayak owner it is locked at night.
The field next door has a row of trees which offer decent shelter from the sun but sadly not from the road which put us off staying here. We didn’t explore the hill town of Colomers so I can’t say whether a decent water supply was available or not. The restaurant next to the kayak centre sold bottled water and had toilets which would have been useful had we stayed.
The field itself was great for Sweep but when at the van we had to keep him on the long lead due to the main road 50 yards away. He had a good walk around the field though and we managed to wear him out quite successfully.
Our Carrefour internet dongle picked up a decent signal here.
Verdict: The riverside spot is an attractive proposal but because the car park is locked at night we thought we might feel a little trapped. The spot next door was too open so we opted out of staying there. It’s still worth a look if you need somewhere desperately and it was good for Sweep and mobile internet.
Sweep’s Verdict: Ambivalent.
