Type: Wild Camp
Name: Secret Car Park
Where: At the back of the tourist office in Santillana del Mar
How to find it: Follow signs for the Tourist Office then head through the car park beside their booth and keep going onto a little road. You’ll see the car park on the left.
We had heard good things about Santillana del Mar from our friends John and Roselyne, so we decided to check it out. There were numerous camp sites in the area but none close or cheap enough for our liking so we drove into the little old town (which isn’t actually by the sea at all) and pitched up in the car park behind the tourist office.
As a wild spot it was almost ideal; there were toilets in the nearby cafés and restaurants as well as water supplies from several fonts. Five minutes walk away there were also public toilets which closed at around 8pm and reopened at 7am.
For Sweep it was good too as we had the place to ourselves for the most part which meant he could go off the lead and wander around a little bit.
It also put us in the heart of the town which is a beautiful old place with stone walls and plenty of history to keep pretty much everyone occupied. We stayed here for two days and left on a Saturday morning. On a weekend you have to pay (I assume you have to pay during the week but nobody came to collect any money from us until Saturday – a massive 2 euros for the whole day).
Our Carrefour internet dongle worked quite well here.
Wild camping may not be your thing but you can always book a hotel in Santillana del Mar by clicking here.
Our Verdict: A great spot near a park and the town centre which was secluded enough to give us plenty of privacy. Avoid on weekends if you’re really doing things on the cheap.
Sweep’s Verdict: Big paws up. It was here he met Monsieur Pompidou.
